When I am starting it my hand is on the top of the tank with my fingers over the back of the tank.

You'd have to be seriously cack-handed, or stupid, to get your fingers between the tank and the flywheel

You don't say if the dinghy is a "roundtail" or a rigid transom dinghy.

Too big and too heavy for a rounttail.. A Featherweight would be ideal.

Came into work this morning and found a 5 gallon pail of Mobil SHC 630 gear oil sitting beside my desk, that someone has given me. No idea yet who it was?!?!?!
It's rated as 1B on the copper strip test think I'll give it a go.

Initial setting for the slow running mixture screw is 1½ turns out from gently seated.

When it 7 degrees F. out, 140 gear oil DOES NOT MOVE!

I am surprised the fuel mixture is dark in colour unless the oil is very dark. If the oil is not highly coloured your fuel is contaminated
