New guy here having carb issues

I was recently given a 102, i had never even heard of seagulls till a few weeks ago and i have fallen in love with them. i have been fighting with a 1980s yamaha 2hp for years, its had multiple rebuilds and now is mostly 2 motors with bits of a third so it really has seen better days.

along comes seagull, simple and robust, reminds me of my singer sewing machine. the motor is mostly intact and doesnt seem to have any major issues apart from the yamaha pw80 carb the previous owner tried to use as the original had disintegrated according to him. good spark and compression, no cracks that i can see.

I cant for the life of me get her to run well with the newer carb, i dont have much money to throw at the seagull and i really do need a daily runner to get to land and back every day, rowing is a pain.

has anyone managed to get a non OEM carb to run on a seagull?

Welcome aboard.

Getting non Gull carbs to work has been done but in your case best to get an original one to fettle the Bird that you have.

Remember Ebay is your friend and John at SOS can help as well as us lot local to you.

Some more pics would be nice as we love pics aye.

there have already been a few cosmetic changes, a good clean as a start did wonders, stripped the paint off the brass tank and polished it up, im planning on replacing the exhaust tube with brass too as the ali one has bad corrosion at the water line

Well a pw80 is an 80cc 2stroke single cylinder motor, not far off from the 100cc seagull, i really hoped it would be as simple as bolting it on. is there any reason that a modern carb from a 100cc motor shouldn't work if you get the jet size right?

Well your putting the carb from an 80cc, 50 : 1, reed valve motor onto a 102cc, 10 : 1, piston ported motor with 25% more capacity, that probably revs 30% less.

What's the throat diameter of your Yam carb & which jets are currently fitted & what size Jets are available at your location & at what sort of cost?

Your also going to need a throttle lever & possible an adjuster for the throttle cable, but most of all do not use without replacing the missing transom screw!

I'd suggest looking on ebay for the correct carb, as setting up the one you have might be tricky. To attach photos see this screenshot:

im on the hunt for an amal carb, looking into some leads locally.

in the mean time look what i found under all that paint on the tank... thats right, 4 cracks from over tightening the clamps.

well after a little looking around i was fortunate enough to be given not one but 3 amal 2 jet carbs, i stripped them all as they were really gunky and rusted. built up one and slapped it on. the motor runs so much better with her original carb and fresh juice with quality oil.

Theres a bad misfire which is the next issue ill address, i did give the ignition system some attention when i cleaned her up, maybe i did something wrong... top of my list is:

The cable I used is for solar panels
The spring i uses from a bik pen, looks stainless but probably isnt. kinda hard to find a brass spring
Modern suppressor cap with built in resistors, suppose its easy enough to replace it with a ring lug and see if it helps

point and plug gaps set at 0.5mm
