Hello again,

Apologies for the long silence. I've managed to get some time off work and am back in the UK.

I have managed to finally reassemble to powerhead and get a nice strong spark.

Had quite a few "issues" but are now finally solved. I've decided to leave out the spacer washer and clamp the base plate slightly higher up (like Hugz's picture) .

Aligning the points properly was very tricky. Even a fresh set of genuine Villiers ones needed fettling to line up. I believe my points pot isn't original? It is identical to to Villiers MK1. Most SDs on the forum seem to have one like this:

I am now trying to make a copper fuel line. I'm having difficulty finding a fitting to connect to the Ewarts fuel tap. I think the fuel tap outlet is 7/16 BSF. I am not sure of this as only have a vernier handy and no gauges. I can only find BSP fittings for sale on vintage car and model steam sites. I am using 1/4 inch OD copper pipe.

Does anyone know the thread and where to get fittings? I've asked George at Villiers Parts with no luck.

Hi Beagle, the engine is looking good so far. I do like the copper magneto covers! I believe the pipe fittings are all BSP.

Everything else seems to be BSP, I am certain the fuel tank end is 1/8 BSP. But my Ewarts fuel tap has an outer diameter of 11.02mm (just under 7/16 inch).

Looking at this BSP chart http://mdmetric.com/tech/thddat7.htm there is no thread close to an outer diameter of 11.02mm.

However, on these BSC and BSF charts http://mdmetric.com/tech/thddat8.htm there is a thread for an OD of 11.113mm (7/16 BSF and BSC)

The TPI of 7/16 BSF is 18, which seems to match my fuel tap. However, this is hard to measure as I only have about 1/4 inch of thread to look at.

Do you make a copper fuel line for your SD? I wonder if the fuel taps come in different outlet threads?

It's a special thread sometimes refered to as 7/16 BSP in the motor cycle field.

7/16 diameter x 19 tpi.

Go into your local outboard/lawn mower service shop, they should have a used one on the bench, depending on what was hanging from it, it will either take a 1/4" olive or a solder on end fitting.

You can always just convert an old seagull black fuel pipe one and just make same olives.

Thanks for the replies, 7/16 BSP seems like a rare thread. Why not make them both 1/8 BSP?

Think I'll try and find a tatty fuel line off ebay and mod it to fit.

It isn't realy a 7/16 bsp it's just called that as it has the same pitch as a 1/4" bsp but is smaller.

If the fuel tap mamufacturer's use a special thread,you have to buy the rest of the fittings from them, Amal & Villiers did the same.

Can some one post him a picture of an SD fuel pipe so he knows what they look like.

Just been mucking around and noted that my early SD (lever) has a different pipe thread to the standard ewarts taps.

Thanks for the info. I've bought a scrappy looking tap and fuel line from eBay. Hopefully I'll be able to make something up from that.

The next step is to sort the fuel tank. The one supplied is the standard 102 "screw filler on side" version.

Is the correct one a "centre fill" with a push on chrome cap? I think my engine is from 1943 (stamped on one of the coolant pipe fittings)

I've been trying to tease the dents out of the existing tank using the freezing water method. Despite using several large hose clips and gradually increasing the volume of water, it has split slightly.

I'm temped to de solder the ends and rebuild it. However, I only have a disposable type blow lamp, which from previous posts I understand isn't up to the job. I can't really justify buying a proper torch for just one job. Furthermore, I'd worry it'll blow up! Should the tank be steam cleaned out before this?

I'm undecided. Repair the old one? Buy a good condition std 102 tank? Or try and find a "centre fill" ?

It would have been a steel tank with a bayonet fit filler to one side.

They're not that common.

The steel SD tanks are fairly hard to find, often you can end up buying an engine at the right price, just because it has a sought after tank, transom bracket, carb etc!

The brass bayonet cap tanks are a little easier to find, as they don't rot away. I find hunting out the bits part of the fun. Once you have some rare bits you will hang on to them

Once painted you'd never know it was brass and not steel!
