JAP Seabee query

Post by livewire »

I have a seabee and before i spend to much time or effort i want to ensure it'll run.

I have started to strip it, i'm happy with the fuel and compression but tested it for a spark today.

I couldn't get a spark, i also can't find any information on the points gap? Also if that doesn't work i'll need to remove the flywheel, is this removed the same way as a Seagull one?

Points I would say around .018 to .020" and the spark plug gap is 0.25".
The flywheels is the same, except it has no key-way, so mark it up before hand or you will have to re-time it all over again.

Great thanks for that, I'll check gaps ant try again before I go for removal. I did attempt yesterday to remove it but it's a stiff one and it didn't budge and I caused a small amount of damage to the thread/nut.

I gather it is a Jap not a ILO, the flywheels are as soft as sh*@ and go out of shape very easily.

It had JAP on it, viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2845

I'll try and have a quick go now and grab a beer whilst i'm down there.

Right i have just tried again after resetting the points and held a new plug against the block.

I now have an intermittent yellow spark, when i held the plug electrode to the block i got a consistant blue spark.

So it does spark but is weak, i will clean the points again as i have a feeling i'm going to break something if i try and remove the flywheel.

I have cleaned the points and now it sparks well.

I'll leave the flywheel on now and am happy to tart the engine up. :D

Tart, did you say, just tart it up, proper job please.
Mix a small tins of hammered gold and a tin of copper together, that will make the right colour.
Thinking about it, your right its only a seabee, just tart it up. :D

As its only a seabee I have bronze hammerite smooth and that will do.

It should be hammered gold and bronze mix, or gold hammered, If its just an old Seabee.
Hammerite is a little expensive, but think how many seabee's you could restore. :P
I stocked up on hammerite when I was restoring bigger things, I could get hold of a 750ml tin for £2.99, lucky I did. :D
