Gull Flusher

Post by Jerry In Maine »

I'm considering an attachment that will let me flush a Seagull motor from the garden hose after coming back from a run in salt water.
Looks like I'll need something moulded to fit the front of the lower unit and to seal around the cooling water intake ports, then a stretchy strap to go around the unit to hold it for a tight fit.

First thought were to cast it from aluminum, making it thick enough in front to take threads for screwing in a hose fitting. The sides would be lined with soft rubber - maybe neoprene - to make a water tight fit, and a "bungee" cargo strap would go around to hold it tight. The amount of aluminum needed would be small enough that I could melt it in my heat treating oven, which is about the size of a counter-top microwave.

Question is am I reinventing the wheel here? Is there something currently available to do the same job?

You could go in from the other end (no snickers). I tapped a piece of tubing into the water discharge holes of my motors primarily to facilitate flow at trolling speeds. But I've also used it for flushing residue by clamping a hose to the tube and backflushing.

I thought about that Todd - sorta like a Seagull enema what with going in the back way.

I thought though that if I feed the water from the lower intakes I could run it w/o it sitting in a barrel.

btw: nice boat in that thread. I plan to build one this winter that similar just for the Seagulls to push around on the local lakes. Heading to Portland, ME soon to pick up the marine ply.

I tapped one of my blocks at the water outlet for 1/8" NPT, that way you can thread in a short brass 1/8" pipe nipple and back flush with your garden hose, suppose it could be run that way as the impeller does not touch the case sides. [never tried it myself though]
Also allows you to set up for water cooled exhaust should the desire strike you [similar to the 102 setup except for the water outlet location on the Century or Forty] . Like doing it this way better than drilling into the block around the exhaust port, enough of a problem area already, IMO
