SD 102 1944

Post by charlesp »

A rather nice 1944 (as best I can tell) long shaft SD

Steel plain black tank (virtually no pitting) with bayonet type cap complete with breather screw, early type magneto with domed top and aluminium cover. Original HT lead pickup with single slot rather than the later 'X'

Correct Amal carb with bronze/brass fittings and plated fuel pipe.

Original steel tiller arm with original and correct brass Amal throttle lever and original fabric covered cable. It is missing the tiller arm grip, however.

Original crankcase, no sign of salt water use, fasteners are excellent.

Original steel (possibly zinc dipped, but that's gone) drive shaft housing and original brass exhaust (never been chromed).

Aluminium gearbox with matching numbered end cap, bearing the C.I.E.S.S. stamp indicating military ownership.

This example has had the water feed pipe replaced with a braided plastic component, which I will replace if required with the correct metal version.

This motor is 'as issued' - without a transom bracket but with the boss for the side mounting which was used for many miltary brackets. The engine runs and pumps water, and is in remarkable condition indicating relatively little use. Although the paint has been carefully removed by a previous owner (who has had the motor over 20 years) the magneto base retains its khaki green, with traces under the flywheel cover, which I have just removed to look at the JM number.

SD 10249 L4 JM 12314

This is a 'dead honest' and original motor, a very representative example from the wartime production that made British Seagull into a going concern.

I will attempt to post photos on Monday. I am putting it here on behalf of my mate Frank, who doesn't have Internet access.

Anyone interested, pm me. If I don't reply quickly it'll be because I'm wrapped up in the dreaded wedding all day tomorrow, and will be lying low on Sunday. The wedding should tell you why I haven't snapped this one up myself. I'll be eating crusts and drinking water for a while...

The motor has now gone, it had been sold (through this forum) by the time I tried to arrange photos!

Sorry, folks. Thanks to those who PM'd me.
