Saving Old Seagulls

I have changed the title as I now know that the two spare crank cases that I have are Silver Century.

The thought was that if they fitted the alloy cage that a 102 series has they would be 102 crank cases?

I see Seagull were doing a Mix and Match thing at the time?

This one is a long shot, it may take years, it may never happen, then again as I have two crank case sets it may become two Silver Century engines?

Where will the parts come from, all I have are two crank case sets, no I have no idea where the rest of the two engines are, what I have and when cleaned up I find the bearings are unmarked, they may even be new and unused?

There again it might take very little time at all.


Interesting, this is often the way i get the first ideas of building a "bitsa". Start with the crankcases and see where it takes you.

The parts bin is becoming thinner, I do see some future in the idea though?

Next I need the power head and a drive shaft down tube.

Having run out of many parts I have just fabricated a dummy drive shaft tube from cardboard and plywood.

This allows me to display the next series 102 engine, I need the block and piston next?

The motor number did not show up when I checked in the SOS search pages.

The number reads WSCL 1451 GG8

What is an Amal 416 carburetor?

Ok, its shown in the Seagull parts book circa 1980 on page 20


To date I have never seen an Amal 416 carb.

Scraping the bottom of my parts bin I discovered a part damaged flywheel base plate, I have a Wipac 2 coil and a probably servicable plug lead.

There is a restored flywheel as well, so progress has been made?

A change of engine, no longer the 102 series but now I find the spare crank cases that I have are stamped with Silver Century engine numbers.

Question, did the 102 series and the Sliver Century use the same crank case?

I have one Century cylinder head that is servicable.

That 102 alloy cage should be removed from this assembly?

Then again I still have no crank, piston, con rod or block so the engine could become either a 102 or a Century, is this correct?

If nothing else I am clearing the shelves of Seagull parts in the direction of what may become a new build?

I have a HT lead, one end was cut off so I screwed in a Champion HT plug cap, the end that fits into the Wipac 2 coil had a spring only, I removed the brass bullet from another HT lead and once fitted, bonded the spring to the bullet with Tipp-Ex

Remember to get as much electrical conductivity between the spring and nipple. This is an area that causes problems of lost or intermittent spark. Yes, nipple can dislodge and disappear.

My next selection is small, one looks quite good, the other needs a spring soldering on?

Yes, I know that new ones are the best idea but by the time I pay then have posted by registered mail, clearing and the vat here I will have paid three times the UK price?

So I recycle whenever possible

I note that Fred in Robertson,Western Cape, RSA is charging R300 for a new HT cable. That is a similar price from the UK and before I ship it in.

If my memory serves me correct l used a piece of a jug heater element as a replacement spring in the past. Only spiral l could find of the right size. I would probably just coil my own now.
