Saving Old Seagulls

Has anybody got any experience of using this product and then spilling petrol on it? I'm curious how good the petrol resistance is, to potentially use it on a motorcycle part that might conceivably come into contact with petrol. Thanks in advance.

Does it say it's petrol resistant ? If not ,I wouldn't use it if petrol is likely to make contact with it !

Yes I know that. However I'm curious what previous experience anyone might have.

Different lacquers is where i'd be looking Adrian. The base colour (in this case Black) shouldn't really make that much of a difference, it's what you put on top of the paint that provides the extra protection against petrol and to some degree scratch resistance and odd knocks.
Some paints will say it does it all,go carefully. I tried using a mainstream product that said it does this and that, true, until you try and and give the work piece a second coat then DISASTER. Reactions and pickling and all my hard work wrecked in seconds ho-hum
There's some very good "off the shelf" lacquers available, but i'd use one from the professional spray booths. They seem to do the job very well.
Give everything ample time to dry and harden off before you think about putting more layers of paint on top. The longer the better (weeks not days in a warm environment like the airing cupboard works well, just dont tell wifey)

The gloss and satin "Simoniz Tough" are all that I have used for the last few years, appears to be petrol resistant, and gives a good finish.
I used it on this cylinder.
Have used cellulose black and 2K, on tanks.

I've just done a quick test on a seagull tiller that was painted about 3 weeks ago with this paint. A rag dipped in petrol did not seem to touch it. Worth knowing.

Simoniz Tough Black gloss it is then Adrian.


How does the paint stand up to temperature H-A being as this is a cylinder?
I'm curious now...

Yes, I've used it to do the headlight nacelle, it's the petrol tank next..spent the last 2 days stipping off about 8 layers of old paint Horrible job.After all this prep I don't want to piant it and then find the paint ruined by a drop of petrol!

For a bike tank I would go with 2K, or if you are worried about toxicity then use Cellulose.

Cellulose is a bit softer when dry but easyier to apply and polish.

Could be easier to pop down the local sprayers and get them to base and clear it, if you dont have access to the kit.

Yes I have emailed a couple of local specialists for a price. With me doing the prep it won't be too expensive. A poor paint job on the tank will let the rest of the bike down!
