You could take the end off, but it is quite a difficult thing to do. As an alternative I would clean the dent area with wet and dry and fill the dents with solder. Then a thin scim of filler and sand down to achieve the final shape. You cold also use epoxy resin to fill the gaps before a final skim of filler.

I would probably take the end off!

As that dent is round with no sharp edges it should be possible to panel beat it out through the filler cap.

Set the tank, with the dent down, settled into a sand bag and secure it, then, with patience, gently tap around the dent from the inside with a rounded wooden rod. Work slowly and regularly inspect the progress. Work from the outside of the dent towards the centre. this is important don't start in the centre.

Don't use epoxy resin, get some West System 410 filler, any good Ship chandler will stock it, it is designed and of the right consistency to fill and easily sand back, after filling and sanding then apply the epoxy. Make sure you thoroughly degrease (acetone is good) and key the surface with an 80 grit paper before applying the filler.

Yes probably the best way to repair tanks ends correctly. H-A has a good video showing how to do it on YouTube. Loads of heat from a large torch required. I have a large propane torch which works well. The important thing is to avoid the temptation to try and prise of the end. Wait for the heat to do the work without damaging the end cap.

However filling can be OK, particularly for smaller dents.
