i'm having trouble getting 140 gear oil locally but i have found sae 85w-140multigrade,
is this any good or not?

Dont use multigrade,you want straight 140,not sure were you get it down your way though.
John(sos) will post you some,it seems pricey but if your only running a couple of gulls it should last you ages.

I buy sae 140 gear oil from my local farm machinery store.I pay around £10 for 5 litres.It is used extensively in farm machinery gearboxes.
