102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
Good evening,
We bought a 1967 - 1973 102 which had not been used for approx 5 years to power a 12ft boat for sea fishing and after doing the usual service and replacing the part we broke (Thank you CharlesP) She fired up on the 8th pull!
We mounted it on the boat and took them both out for the maiden voyage and lauched from Wick which is near Christchurch, Dorset.
All went well and we didnt sink which was a bonus but have a couple of issues with the 102, you cant kill the engine with the throttle so that should just be adjustment for the cable. The issue we have is it will not run without the choke being all the way open? Any ideas please?

I gather you mean It only runs with the choke closed or on.The issue we have is it will not run without the choke being all the way open? Any ideas please?
Sounds like you have a blocked jet.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
Sorry, should clarify, I meant the choke cover has to be all the way out, if you push it in the motor splutters and dies.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
That's fine, the older 102's didn't have a choke on them.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
Cool, will take carb apart and clean out jets, hopefully that will solve the issue.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
What is the best way to clean out jets, have taken carb off and removed float chamber. Do I have to remove needles or can I clean them in situ?
Kind regards

If you haven't got a jet removal tool, then I would clean them still in the carb.
What is the best way to clean out jets, carb cleaner.
Don't push anything metal though the jets, if you haven't got anything suitable, try some thin copper wire.

No need to remove them. I cleaned the sticky substance with a needle from a syringe. Of Course this needle can't get through the holes of the jets. For that reason I rasp another needle to become very very thin. If you do so, be very careful not to break a needle inside or harm the jets. Thin wire of copper is also suitable after removing any ''difficult'' substance from the jets.
I love the 10600/145 turns!!!

No needles. Please!
Especially no rasped or filed needles. Nothing harder than copper wire. These jets are brass which is a soft metal, the internal profile is important.
So no steel at all, not even steel wire. Not even brass wire. No needles.

Thank you, I will use carb cleaner and see if that shifts blockage.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
I have cleaned out carbs and shone a torch through and needles look clear so fingers crossed.
2 more questions please.....
I have taken prop split pin and spring off so I can run in in bucket without prop starting to run (you have to hold clutch lever down or vibration makes the lever go up and prop starts) Should the prop slide off shaft as its firmly attached?
The tank is quite badly dented, What is the best way to remove dents, have looked at faq and dont want the cut ends of tank off as wont be able to reseal properly, Is there anything that is fairly easy to do at home?

Have a look at your exhaust clamp, has one part of it been ground a little square, a lot of times they get put on wrong, it holds the lever under the exhaust clamp and it stops it going into gear on its own.

Thank you, will have a look at that, should the prop just slide off with spring removed and what is the best paint to use on engine?
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
Once the spring has been removed, try rotating the prop back and forth while pulling; all mine are quite tight on the shaft.
Re: 102 - WC 385 R6 - Its Alive!
Make certain there are no rough spots or burrs, especially along the edges of the spring slot on the prop shaft.
You have a clutch, why take off the prop?
