SD for sale
SD9965L4 long shaft circa 1945 for sale in excellent condition after a sympathetic overhaul and rebuild aimed at restoring close to original. Only selling to make space and fund some workshop equipment.
Magneto number JM12421, which seems about right for the serial number of engine.
Engine starts easily and runs well, with normal flow of water, that slows down to a trickle at tickover.
Engine fully stripped, checked and rebuilt with the following work done:
Cylinder - Fully stripped all fittings removed, all paint removed flushed to remove all debris and repainted.
Crankcases - Fully stripped, cleaned and reassembled using new stainless nuts on original studs.
Magneto - Fully stripped, cleaned and reassembled. Correct bakelite spark plug cap fitted.
Gearbox - Innards removed and cleaned, found to be in excellent condition, new nipples fitted and rebuilt with a light polish. Correct 2 blade SD prop. Ministry inspector stamp is present on the skeg.
Carb - Fully stripped, cleaned and reassembled, correct "Seagull" inlet fitted, along with correct copper fuel pipe, now rebent to closer to correct shape.
Steel tiller - Refurbished, with new rubbers and washers fitted, correct wingnut.
Tank - Fully refurbished brass tank with bayonet cap in as new condition. Some small dents lead loaded, tiny amount of filler in a few places. New SOS reprinted decals and petrol resistant lacquer.
Leg - Removed several layers of old paint to find remains of original zinc coating, so left as is to protect originality.
Transom bracket - As with most SDs a later bracket is fitted.
Price Open to realistic offers via PM, potential swaps with a earlyish complete Marston also considered. Please note that responses might be a little delayed this week as I'm going to be abroad. If no interest here it will go on ebay in 1-2 weeks time.

Re: SD for sale
Nobody interested in this one then? I would rather it went to an enthusiast from the forum.
If not then ebay it is.

Re: SD for sale
I don’t think you should be discouraged by an apparent lack of interest.
I suspect that to a majority of forum members a large part of the enjoyment of Seagull ownership is the process of repair and restoration. Acquiring a restored example means a lot of that pleasure is not to be had.

Re: SD for sale
Anybody interested in doing a swap, for either an interesting pre war engine, or small lathe, with cash adjustment negotiable either way?
Re: SD for sale
Now listed on ebay as a private listing. One day to go.

What is a private listing?
Good luck. Still think you should hang on to it.

Re: SD for sale
The private listing option hides the identities and email addresses of all bidders, both during and after the auction. So only the seller and the highest bidder see the listing results, and only the seller knows who bought the item.
Re: SD for sale
The oz ebay does that all the time. Wonder if the US site is the same.
I've added a question/statement if you wish to add it. 1945 definitely 4.5hp...

Re: SD for sale
Now sold
However it has gone to very good home and will be getting shown off at steam rally this weekend I believe.
More importantly the new owner is young chap and I gave him the tour of my modest collection. Youth is important to keep the scene going. The seed is planted and I believe more seagull breeding will now take place.
So I am pleased with the outcome.

Re: SD for sale
Yes, I was worried some speculator would buy it and break it for spares. Nothing worse than that.
Bad news is the myford lathe I was going to buy is now not available, my mate has decided to hang on to it. A bit like collecting outboards I suppose. So i have been looking at the Warco lathe range. Excellent value, my mate with the myford has just bought one.

Re: SD for sale
Warco sell good tools, my father has a Warco vertical mill which is very good.
A friend of mine has a large Warco lathe that he bought x-demo.
He saved lots on the retail price, and got lots of bits thrown in. It would be worth asking if there are any deals available.

Re: SD for sale
Yes I'll have a sniff about. Warco are having an open day in early august, might be worth popping up and having a natter.

Re: SD for sale
Good Sale and the future of this motor looks assured, well done!
AU$400.00 is what I would think as being a fair price for a loved Old Dear such as this.
Interesting that real value is appreciated.
Interesting Seagulls in this condition will fetch far more over the next 12 months and into the future.
