to the accepted wisdom of many that the Siba recoil mechanism is a hateful conversion of the pre-electronic ignition seagull. I made the mistake - bought one off ebay. The frame went on ok, so I thought, oh good, this is easy. Then the recoil mechanism - bit too knackered to work well, so renewed the pressure pads and clutch mechanism. Then discover it's a right pig of job to set it level so that it doesn't foul - like an old clock - has to be just right. Finally tried it out - unfortunately it chose to start first pull, but when the recoil chose to foul again - result - sheared off the mechanism completely on one bolt! So now I thought have I damaged a perfectly good seagull! So I took the whole thing off, apologised profusely to my 40plus for the ordeal, and it started first pull of the rope cord it had originally, and ran beautifully. So I concluded - why, or why did I think this was a good idea? The beauty of the wrap around cord is that there is nothing to go wrong!

I have to say I agree with you about the SIBA units - I think they're horrible in the extreme, and they're ugly as well!.

I'm not surprised you had trouble - I have the SIBA fitting instructions in fron of me as I type, the accent is very much on alignment, with 8 levelling washers supplied to achieve the correct fit. No thanks!

Whenever a Seagull comes in with one it's despatched to the spares shelf without delay!

Even British Seagull didn't like them. Way-Hope would have nothing to do with them; he reckoned - as did his engineers - that there was a very good chance of catching a stray finger between the cage and the flywheel. And of course it was flying in the face of the accepted Seagull 'Simplicity' philosophy.

There were other, earlier, attempts. One was the 'Sea-Start', marketed for a few years around 45 years ago; that one had a cast alloy wrap-around shroud. There was another, too, which I don't have a name for.

Even so, it's feather in the Seagull's cap to have so many 'aftermarket' accessories made by outside concerns - you don't get many add-ons made for your Hondas or Mariners nowadays!

I had a recoil starter on my EFNR that I removed as it also defeated the 'simplicity idea' ...I just saw it as more things to go wrong.

We had our last sail of the season yesterday on the Hudson - 10C and a light breeze pushed our Island along nicely...Roscoe our Forty Plus brought us home at sunset....bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
