EXCELLENT VIDEO REPLACING DUFF VILLIERS COIL

Post by Niander101 »

Maybe useful fixing the sd/102 villiers ignition units?

This one is a little older and the same thing, but with outboards.

Coils are still about, not time to worry just yet, I needed one for my Anzani twin, a company on the net that sell coils and other villiers parts (oops) quoted £39 + p&p + 3% for a Wico coil, also quoted the previous owner of the motor £58 and was told that BSA coils will not fit, yes they will.(£20)
Also told me it was a new coil, when pushed, it was, new old stock.
Anyway had a look around for one and got one for £10 including p&p and have two plugs sparking away today.
If they are a common coil, someone will make them.

Excellent? Do you really want to put your neck on the line with just one grub screw not vibrating loose whilst the other end of the coil core is flapping in the other "coil ear"? Maybe OK on a stationary engine in a field but out at sea/fast flowing estuary? Other people make the effort to add distance collars onto short coils to make up the length..........I suggest not encouraging others to take the risk by suggesting this is "excellent"

Good diagnostics includes checking points, capacitor, plug and lead not to mention the initial "short the test leads together" Who says that 5 kilohms is spot on the money for an SD ignition coil? That is how urban myths like spinning gulls with electric drills are born..........

Flash is quite right when he contrasts the use of a 'nearly fits' coil on a stationary engine with its use on an outboard you may actually need to trust.

40TPI of this forum has done a lot of detailed and good work on coils of this type, and I feel he would agree.

I think Flash is very close to spot on Niander, the resistance is almost twice what we'd expect to see from a Seagull type Villiers coil, for a newby he's obviously read a lot of relavent posts unlike a high percentage of us.

It's just a shame that a cheap asian coil is just too small, keep on searching!

Regardless of the identity of the poster he merely makes a point, and his point is reasonable if forcefully expressed...

Wait a minute you've just torn into him, for what, he's not wrong.

What's wrong with his post?

Wish I had a bit more time on my hands; today I'm responsible for a two year old boy who has not stopped jabbering for the last two hours. He has scared away the cat, and is only interested in playing with things that are dirty, fragile or dangerous...

OK lets educate the moderator
quickly ripped from the web but sums it up nicely.

"A forum moderator oversees the communication activity of an Internet forum. He monitors the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of threads. Moving discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized is also a common job for a forum moderator.

If the tone of a forum becomes hostile or starts to move in the direction of personal attacks, the forum moderator usually has the discretion to lock the discussion to prevent heated, interchanges. He may also be able to hide discussions he deems unworthy of further discussion. Conversely, topics he feels deserve further examination can be posted indefinitely by the moderator even if they garner no comments.

Moderator duties are as diverse as the forum topics themselves. Some moderators are virtually invisible; they surface only when situations arise that do not seem likely to resolve themselves. Other forum moderators are always there, ready to intercede at the smallest hint of discourse. Public forum moderators often have to enforce many rules of conduct and decorum, as public contributors tend to communicate without abandon, which can sometimes upset other commenters."

so you see you are a policeman of sorts.....

....has the discretion to...

The hostility in this thread is more directed towards our new member than from him, I feel.

At the end of the day we're just a bunch of blokes tinkering with motors.

I sometimes feel a responsibility when we talk about these motors. If we advise our members to do something that may later be a cause of regret then we need to remember what these little outboards could be used for, and the dangers inherent.

Boys, boys, calm it.
There's no need to get niggly, we are trying to help each other and maybe learn somethng new in the process.

Can we not, give our thoughts be they right or wrong and watch what others think on the matter, simple as that. No need to get into any slagging, we've had that not so long ago.

Now handbags away and shake hands.
