102 water pump housing

Post by StephenRT »

Amongst a job lot of Seagull parts I’ve recently acquired is a water pump housing/exhaust flange for a model 102.
This differs from the earlier type in that the pinch bolt faces the rear like the forty series and there is no brass outlet tube from the water pump housing to the short rubber pipe that connects the copper supply tube to the cylinder.
There is a counterbored hole in the right place for the outlet but no obvious indication of how the connection to the supply pipe was made.
The counterbored hole is completely unthreaded with a diameter of approximately ½ an inch at the top of the housing with the pump outlet hole much smaller.I have seen a couple of photographs of 102’s with this type of housing, but am unable to see how the connection was made.
Can anyone assist please?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Stephen,

all of my 102's have a stub for the short length of rubber hose to attach to, I have yet to see one with a hole in the housing. Possibly the stub has broken/corroded away on yours and a previous owner came up an "alternative".
It should be possible to machine a new stub and have it fixed into place.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. Both of my 102’s have the type of connection you describe.I’m pretty sure that this housing is off a later model (the type with a forty/century type tiller lug,not the original wingnut fixing).
On the early types the brass stub is threaded and screws into the housing, the hole in this one is unthreaded and shows no sign of ever having been modified. It looks very similar to a Century water pump housing but has the forward facing cutout in the exhaust stub for the water feed pipe,it was fitted to a 102 gearbox and the pump impeller chamber is exactly the same as the earlier type.

102 Water Pump Housing Types

Post by Charles UK »

Seagull 102 water pump housings had 2 different type of connectors for the water feed to the cylinder, the type everybody has talked about allready & the type that had no brass spigot , just a hole in the water pump housing that the clear plastic connector used for the spigot type pushed into, the plastic connector might have been longer I've never checked.
If I remember right it was a late 102 modification so it should only be found on unpolished water pump housings with the exhaust exit below the cavitation plate.
Like everything Seagull there were several different types of water pump housings,

Starting with

Straight out the back exhaust, pinch bolt at the front, grease nipple for pinion top bearing, brass water connector spigot, cast in lower rudder pintle, polished finish. Used on ON & OP.

Straight out the back exhaust, pinch bolt at front, grease nipple, brass connector, evidence of rudder pintle removal, polished finish. Used on early SD.

Straight out the back exhaust, pinch bolt at front, grease nipple, brass connector, 2 holes level with the impeller, circa .25" diameter either side of the housing , perhaps were there for preassure relief, polished finish.
Used on later SD

Low exhaust outlet, brass spigot, polished.

Low exhaust outlet, brass spigot, unpolished.

Low exhaust outlet, no spigot, unpolished.

I can't remember all the details on the last 3 or 4 & it's too cold to go & have a look & there was the very late type for the plastic water pump impeller.

The other Charles is really the man to respond about the post SD 102s.
