help with new/old seagull

Post by wayne nicol »

hi all- brand spanking new here- i have wanted a seagull for at least the last 30 years- well i finally got given one last night- why do we punish ourselves so!!??!!
anyway this motor was running perfectly- until the previous owner passed away- so the motor has not run in about 5 years.
it was in his shed- and all his other gear was immaculately looked after- so i expect the same with the seagull.
it does have some old fuel in the tank though ( smells stale!!)

so how best do i go about getting her going again.- i didnt want to do anything until i had heard from folks here.
apparently mod. no: F P
and serial: 796 N O
cant seem to get a result from the ser no search on this site- but will try some more.
thanks all
in anticipation

Hi,

I just tried the ser no. and got this, http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/i_ ... um=FP796n0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I assume the engine turns over freely?

I'd ditch the fuel, and clean the fuel system from tank, fuel cock (and built in filter), fuel pipe, banjo bolt (inc 2nd filter) then the float bowl.

Then i'd check the spark plug if not replace and clean and set the points.

I'd also drain the gearbox oil and top up with fresh oil.

2nd pull she should run

Well, until the new pictorial maintenacne Guides are up on the site, you'll have to make do with the instructions on John's FAQ pagehttp://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/faq/faq.htm

Scroll down till you get to the subheading 'How do I start my British Seagull'. Follow the tips there and if you get stuck, come back here with questions.
