Opinion on my pinion

Post by OwdJockey »

Well not exactly, but it sounded catchy. :D :D

Bought a WS Silver Century a few weeks ago and today finished preparing it to run, which it did after a few minutes.

The engine ran well for about 10 minutes then started to vibrate. I killed the engine and tried to re-start. Managed to re-start ok but I noticed there was no wash. Pulled the engine from the water and noticed that the prop was not turning with the engine. There seemed a large amount of fore-&-aft play in the prop shaft. Drained the oil which was a dark green emulsion, removed the spring, washer, collar, end cap and finally the crown wheel. I noticed there was NO rubber oil seal washer(40/236) or Crown wheel thrust washer (1383).

Could this have explained the reason for the crown wheel disengaging from the bevel pinion? I examined the teeth of the bevel pinion which seemed ok.

I examined closely the teeth of the crown wheel which showed signs of pitting and localised corrosion together with some minor damage to the teeth. The profile appeared to be ok. I attach a number of images of the the crown wheel. Is this crown wheel ok to re-use?

Thanks in advance

Please could you post where you are, as I have a better crownwheel rolling around in the passenger footwell of my car, which is yours if you want to pick it up, try John for the thrust washer there are 3 different thicknesses,.082", .095" & .104" you will have to experiment to see which is best.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Thanks Charles for your kind offer.

I've now amended my profile to include a couple of things, including where I live. Unfortunately, I live someway from Berkshire and at present have no plans to travel south. I should say though I am presently walking the Thames Path (in stages) from Cricklade(source) to the Thames Barrier. At present I have reached Oxford and will be passing close-by Maidenhead before Christmas, so I might take you up on the crown wheel. :) :)

Was not aware of the different thicknesses of thrust washers, also thanks for that.

I had no real intention of totally stripping down the Silver Century, but if somebody had failed to replace the thrust washer, what else have they left out? So It seems this is another restore Project to my 40+(which thankfully is in much better shape) :D

Are you really really sure it is in the foot well? Were there two of them? :)
