to all my beloved readers ....
crumbs this all just illustrates how nerdy one can get ....
got a smallish 4 blade clover-leaf prop on recently acquired SJM
engine needs the Mark I treatment to clean fuel right through, set points etc etc, but as you wind on the juice it gets the vapours and doesn't want to play
wondered if the prop is wrong, and requires too much energy to spin up properly, so overloads engine and hence poor performance ????
wise words of advice from all associated Wizards gratefull recieved as always
correct prop for 1956 SJM ?

Timberman,
At least some brochure pics show the SJM with a 4 blade clover leaf prop ... perhaps just the ones headed for Ireland.
I wouldn't suspect the prop until I gave it a thorough tune-up and carb cleaning. The vapors (vapours) you mention sound like a lack of proper vapors from the carb.
I've got a 9" clover leaf prop on my crisp little '75 40+ just because it looks to me to be a real propeller. I can't discern a bit of difference in performance between it and the correct but ugly hydro-fan.
