featherweight cooling water problem
My featherweight stopped pumping water. I flushed it, following instructions in SOS website, and it pumped water fine in a test tank. Put it back on a boat and it was good for about half an hour, then stopped pumping again. Have just flushed it through again, and again it's fine on test, I'll by trying it again on a boat soon. Has anyone any experience of/advice about recurring pumping problem? Thanks - lazybird?
Eliminate the easy possibilities first, check pump housing insides to make sure its not partially clogged. Blow out the riser tube leading to the cylinder with compressed air.
If there are loose flakes of corrosion in the cylinder water jacket they could be catching in the smallish water jacket passage at the top right hand side of the cylinder where the water has to go before it starts to drop through the exit passage that leads to the water exit from the cylinder. This would of course require that the cylinder head be removed for a thorough cleaning of the cylinder water passages. If you do this pay particular attention to a very thorough cleaning of the passages where the water first enters the water jacket. Yes, the ones that are the most difficult to get at.
By the time you have done several water jackets you may be able to do a complete job in an hour.
