40 Minus Restoration

Post by c3q »

Dear all, I am brand new this site and am looking for some advice on a 40 Minus I have just come across.

It is currently split in to a number of main parts:
Magneto & Flywheel
Gear box and drive shaft - prop fitted
Block, Carb, Tiller & Crankcase cover
Tank (looks like a Long Range Variety)

Apart from gaskets, the only obvious missing part is the piston, plus one of the cylinder head bolts is not like the other three.

It looks like it has been lightly used and appears to be in very good condition, but of course, there is no history as to why it was split in the first place.

I have the opportunity to rebuild the engine, but would like to know if it is still possible to get hold of a suitable piston and whether gaskets are still available or can be made from suitable material - and if there are other problems I should try to indentify before starting.

I have a number of photos available and can take more if this would help, but I'm not sure how to add them or what this board's protocol is towards them.

Serial number is SJM 13115

Thanks in advance

Posting photos then
you cannot upload them directly to the forum, that would need loads of server space to store them so they have to be on an accessible server somewhere that will allow direct linking from the forum. Your own website if you have one but otherwise a free photo-hosting site such as Photobucket

Set yourself up with an account at www.photobucket.com and upload your pictures to that following the instructions on there.
I suggest though that you limit the size to 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 so that the final result fits people's screens without scrolling

Your album will display your pictures as thumbnails. run your mouse over the thumbnail and a list of lines of code will appear below it. One of those lines is labelled IMG code. Click on that and then copy the highlighted line of code to your clipboard by your preferred method (eg ctrl C) I repeat ... the line labelled "IMG code" ... not one of the others tempting though they look.

Paste that line of code (ctrl V, or whatever method you prefer) into your post where you want the picture to appear.

When you have mastered the basic use of P'bucket take some time to discover how to generate the code for a number of pictures simultaneously and how to post clickable thumbnails. Also, by using "link options" under the first thumbnail in your album you can set the lines of code to appear always instead of on mouse over only.

BTW always check your post in preview. It's not totally foolproof but if your picture does not appear in preview it wont appear in your post
