Amal 416 Questions

Post by rbarkerscb »

Hi All,
Just joined the group here. I recently acquired a Silver Century # ESCL 1092 BB9, which is a model 75 long shaft with a clutch, apparently built in Feb. '89. It has the Amal 416 carb, about which I have a bunch of questions:
It is missing the two adjusting crews (bleed screws?) on the right side. In the diagram in the manual it doesn't show them, but they are pictured in a photo in Don Meyer's "The Classic British Seagull" ( page 106). They are typical of this kind of screw: conical pointed end, rubber o-ring. One is a little bigger than the other. However, he doesn't explain what they do or how to adjust them.
Where can I get some replacements, complete with o-rings?
How should they be adjusted? Is there an adjustment starting point (e.g., 1/2 turn out from all the way in)? Is one for air and one for fuel? Why aren't they shown in the diagram?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Rob Barker
(I also have a 40 featherweight that powers a small dinghy and is working fine.)

Another example of why we don't endorse this publication.

The Amal 416 fitted to the model 75 had no, adjustment screws, this model has no stop button so no need for idle adjustment or an idle mixture screw.

As a matter interest, is your copy a first or second edition? as John spent several days correcting numerous errors in the first edition, on the understanding that all the corrections would be made in the second.

And as a matter of principle this site in no way endorses any violation of British Seagull's copyright.

While the concept of a comprehensive "Bible of British Seagull Outboards" is a great idea, technical accuracy might save a lot of confusion & problems.

I guess I have the first edition. And it looks like I stepped into something here.

Anyway, I'll just put the carb back on with the holes empty and see what happens. Right now I'm still cleaning out the fuel tank, but everything else looks okay.

The choke flap has broken off, but I think I can improvise something to get it started while I search for a more permanent solution.

Try blowing down the "holes" I expect that you find there is no hole if you have the right carb.

You haven't stepped into anything, you just bought a book that seems to have been rushed into print with numerous errors & contradictions & with many pictures & illustrations "borrowed" from the copyright owners without their consent.

There is a member of this site who's compiling a Clymer type manuel that will cover all of the Seagull outboard production, I belive from 1937 to 1993. With colour illustrations, all the correct dimensions, including all the carbs, gearboxes, ignitions.
He's been doing it for the last 12 months, perhaps in another 12 months he might be getting close to publishing, as he's undertaking a huge amount of work.

I've checked all the motors that I have with Amal 416 carbs, the model 40,45,55,60 & Curlew are fitted with Amal 416 carbs without screws, the only model I can find that used a 416 with the screws is the Osprey & that has a stop button & they didn't make very many of those, so Mr. Meyer must have got that picture from the QUB spares book & assumed all the previous seagull's that used that carb used that version of it, & that was not the case.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
