Whining Noise for EFPC

Post by tatty1531 »

Hi All,

my project this for year breathign life into a unloved '79 EFPC has proved worthwhile. Lots of trips out over the past few months going further and further afield. (Eatbourne to Hastigs and back last w/e with four up. Left the cat at home...)
I have noticed a small concern which I am hoping someone can advise on?
After being used fairly hard for a few hours I can hear a whine type noise. I first I thought it was a mechanical vibration of something else on boat/transom etc but I think not. It wines for a few seconds, fades away for 30 and then wines again. The motor still runs well, cooling looks fine and everything (bar the exhaust) is cool to touch.
The only other thing i have noticed that after a long trip at sea you get a lot of salt crytallising on the exhaust tube and this sometimes blocks up the top two breather holes.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Chris -- whines normally emanate from the gearbox. Suggest you drain it and refill with fresh oil, and with that done, that's about the best you can do. Don't worry about a whine unless it gets progressively worse - the gears weren't particularly precision items!! (bet the cat was pleased to be left at home - usually not helpful on matters mechanical)

Think your gearbox qualifies for a 140 weight oil rather than the 90 weight used in the later gearboxes, but this site will tell you.

either as Rick suggests ...and he is a consumate expert ...

or you have had the misfortune to obtain one of the few 'Gulls built by an Australian ...

proof check ....
dip it in beer ...if as above, the enhanced whining will wake up the neighbourhood
Neal...errrr... an ON, OP, 2xSD, F, 3xSJP, LLS, 2xFV, FVP, FPC, CPC WPCL, WSC, and a few eggs hatching, hopefully

Generally we stop whining when dipped in beer, unless, perish the thought, it is warm...

Thanks all,

I will change the oil and see what happens.
I will try the beer one; I know what happens!
