gearbox horror

Post by clive »

Hi folks - I just looked in the gearbox of my 40+ - a bit of a horror story inside, thick yellow grease which I have cleaned out, but have discoverd that the bronze bush next to the prop is very worn, hence the gears wouldnt mesh properly, I have turned the bush around to give the correct clearance, but which washers should be where? There is/was a mashed rubber washer next to the bush..is it to be replaced??
cheers

The Forty plus gearbox looks like this:-

Image

#7 is the rubber oil seal washer
#12 and #19 are the hardened thrust washers

I would have said that the bush #8 has a small flange on the outside and therefore cannot be turned round and has no bearing on the inter meshing of the gears. That is surely determined by the thrust washer #12 and the bush #13

thanks for this Vic, I have found a metal washer where the rubber oil seal (7) washer should be - a very useful diagram! I am begining to suspect my whole 40+ is a bit of a frankensteins monster, made up of old washing machines, cars etc etc

Just to add a quick question. What can I use to seal the gearbox drive shaft? When turned on its side, there is oil leaking out. Any suggestions re. car parts or washing machine spares?

These Seagulls seem to leak whichever way they are tilted, from any joint, hole or pipe on any part of the machine. This charming aspect of Seagull ownership has very much failed to impress my other half! - How much is leaking out - drops, trickle or flood?
