amal carb

Post by Jedda »

New to Outboards. Have done a bit of work on a TD and fired it up yesterday. Great stuff, fired up second pull. However, I had an explosion. All's well but I am reluctant to have another go until I get to the root cause ( ). Any thoughts, apart from my own stupidity? Carby issue? Float? I noticed after she all cooled down a slight seepage from the small hole in the float chamber. I am hooked and want to see her running nicely again.

Sounds as tho your timing is out, check your points gap. But then smoke and bangs are part of gulls! How big explosion or just a backfire and smoke from carby.

Cheers Spontaneously Combustible.

Thanks for the reply. Actually it was a fire that could have been really serious. The small "overflow" hole was seen to be leaking fuel from the float chamber so my guess is that there is an issue with its abiity to shut off the fuel flow. A problem with being non-mechanically minded and I guess stupid in this instance. I will have a fire extinguisher handy next try. Still appreciate any further thoughts. Must try to source a book on these little beauties.

Fuel overflowing from the float chamber indicates that the float is not controlling the level correctly.
Unfortunately the section on carbs that used to be on the website seems to have been lost. Even the link to the Amal carb now only produces a diagram of the single jet 416. I assume your engine has the two jet Amal.

However I have a diagram of the two jet Amal and the parts list on Photobucket

I reckon you will have to investigate the operation of the valve, maybe just a bit of dirt in there preventing it from closing properly.

Cheers, again. Look forward to getting to the bottom of it. Then on to the next bit. Hey, my little FVP runs well. Just wish I could swap teh barbie across to my TD. Mind you, it's fantastic how many bits do interchange. Needed a new gear box plug and no problems just screw out the baby and straight in to the bigger one.

Another matter; I am having great trouble sourcing SAE 140 here in Western Australia. Got the multi grade but not good enough from what I read here. Tried all the auto parts dealers and the lubricant distributors but only seem to come up with availability in bulk.

Or maybe a punctured float, or even a float whose spring clip isn't properly registered on the needle.

I have to say that the 'explosion' is a worry. There's frequently fuel swilling about, and it takes a spark to set it off. Have you got a stray spark arcing somewhere? Turn the motor over in the dark and you may be surprised. Or even easier start the thing while holding bare metal. If you get a jolt you have a problem.

A new HT lead is most probably the answer to that one.

The earlier advice about checking the gap is sound, it may be a good idea to check that the timing plate is correctly aligned with the locating screw in the dimple too.

You folks are amazingly helpful. Thanks for the gear oil advice, picked some up from Malz this morning. Now for the next bit.

Cheers.
Doug.
