Well I launched the boat ( 22ft Invader sloop ) over Easter and am now officially powered only by Seagull, model 90 and I guess my 40+ as emergency backup ( )
Was quite impressed with the 90. Less effective going backwards as expected but more than enough pull there to get me off the launching trolley! and was able to easily stem the tide going forwards on approx 1/2 throttle. Had to get back to the club quickly to assist with the other launches so have not done full trials yet but will try it out later and publish some results.
Question: Whats the best way to 'lock' a Seagull straight ahead? I could lock the boats rudder and steer with the motor but thats a bit awkward...
Hey thats a neat setup Ian! Don't think I can do exactly the same as my motor is mounted on a sprung outboard bracket so in use would be further back than the transom and lower down too. however the rudder still goes over the top of the transom so I might be able to do similar with a couple of UJ's but it would have to connect much nearer to the rudder pivot, wouldn't get as much steering as you do but any would assist! thanks for the idea.
It reduces the noise. Not wonderfully effective, but it's noticeable if it is removed. Based on an old idea from PBO involving aluminium film canisters over the exhaust vent holes, pierced and stuffed with stainless panscourer, it is a half tube, open at the bottom and flattened at the top, stuffed with stainless panscourer secured on the exhaust retaining screw at the top and by a monel wire strap round the exhaust at the bottom. (The original concept needed rather a lot of holes drilled in the exhaust). I *have* considered fitting water injection to the exhaust, but I wonder how much of the noise is from the induction end? That would be a lot harder to silence while still letting the gull get its lungs full
