I would say have a look at the water jacket, I had the same problem and found the brass fitting was half blocked.

The cooling system has been checked ok . the engine starts and runs well, but struggles with the standard prop on . If anyone has a 4:1 barge pusher gearbox ( clutched) I would be most interested in trying that. My boat is quite heavy and it might be more suitable.

Could you post pictures of your lower unit & prop & do you have access to a rev counter.

the lower unit picture is on the previous page. I took the prop off. I'll have to find it to identify it. I 'll let you know. Red

So it the engine over heating when used on the boat or only in the wash down tank.
is there a lot of water coming out of the tell tail or is it only a dribble?
I have made a lot of props and tweeked all of them and loaded the engine up to almost the point of stopping, as long as you have good water flow the engine should not over heat.
Try looking for a prop with 102 printed on it.

Hi Nudge. The water flow is really good, no problem, its on the boat things go wrong.. Maybe the engine is just worn out and gets hot when pushed hard with the standard prop. the revs drop off and it gets a bit warm. It then becomes unreliable and dies. As soon as I put on a small prop, it cools down and runs well.

Could you post pics of your boat with one of the transom with the motor on it including the prop, & both side views of the motor & the electrode on the spark plug you've been using.
What fuel mix are you running & is your carb jetted for that mix?
Seagulls are not famous for running hot, in fact it's the opposite.

Can't do the pics at present, but I can say that it is jetted to 10:1 ( 45 no. jet). have checked the water level over the exhaust flange when in use. The spark plug......have used several different plugs, all as recomended by seagull. - no difference. Gone by the book all along. have also tried wipac ignition system, but no difference. Might try another top end unit just out of interest. Maybe this unit is just worn out, although the psi reading I took last year was ok.( can't remember what it was ,off hand)

I was interested in the colour of the plug electrode after prolonged use.
It's almost impossible to get a Seagull piston hot enough to cause problems, without major cooling problems!
When the mechanicals are worn out they run cooler!

I see what you mean, the plug was carbon colour, ( not white indicating heat) I'm going to put it in the tank again next weekend and go through it again. ( boat out of the water for a while).
