burnt off WD40 has a rather distinctive odour

Bore will need a hone, but it will go to the race :D

It is just like working on a 50 year old landrover, simple job turns into a total engine rebuild.

Had planned to give it a spin on the Thames tomorrow, perhaps not this week.

1952/53, that's as close as it gets. My guess based on the number being late in the series (same as you probably) is 53,

Make sure you get the rings quite clear of muck.

Major difference between a Seagull and a Landrover is you can't train the Labradors to jump into a Seagull...

Should only take you an hour to get her up and running now!

Those rings do snap quite easily.

Will post picture of the finished restoration, tank will test my panel beating. at least I will be able to get the ends off. :lol:

Good question.

I do have photos of 102 models that very year at the Canadian Boat Show stand wearing the 'White Bird Facing Left' decal, the currently available replica of which I have taken a dislike to on the grounds of poor accuracy.

But some slightly later adverts still show the 'Seagull in Ribbons' variety.

The former is the correct decal, the latter the nicer of the two, but until I have seen good current copies of both I'm absolutely unable to recommend either.

Best bet is to wait until John has spearheaded the current effort to produce earlier decals, which shouldn't be long.

I last used an ultrasonic tank many years ago cleaning mapping pens; this naturally turned into cleaning all the jewellery in the office which did me no end of good with the girls. This would be mid seventies

My mind turned again to the subject recently when the Current Primary Woman inherited a vast quantity of jewellery which she said she would like to have cleaned.

You're probably way ahead of me, of course. But I went off looking, and am wondering if a tank of sufficent dimensions to immerse a 102 block would be a bit obvious as a 'jewellery cleaner'. None of the brooches are that big!

What solvent or detergent do you use if any?

Does an ultrasonic tank remove the gunk from a carburettor?

The tank that I have is just big enough for the 102 head, but you need to turn it over to do all sides.

The detergent that I use is truck cleaner, it is very strong so watch out for the work tops in the kitchen. but I do let beloved clean the hob with it, it is like very concentrated Cilit Bang.

Cleaning carbs with it works very well, all small components clean well.

I also have to clean the familys gems and glasses, the only thing that I have been told not to clean is model aero engines with ball races for bearings, because it ruins the ball races.

Guess where I got mine, Ebay. :lol:

I have an industrial ultrasonic cleaner ,Its nearly big enough to fit a whole motor in let alone a block lol.Interesting that you use truck cleaner as im looking for an additive for mine.Has to be cheap though as it holds about 20 gallons of water.Anyone need anything cleaning?

It is a runner :D , power head done. now time for the polishing, painting, panel beating.

She will go to the race (if enough time for Thames trials, to make sure it is reliable)

Has any one made brass split pins, or are they readily available?

The gods of piston freeing were on my side.

My last packet of brass split pins came from B&Q, but I am almost certain I have seen them in the local chandler's at severalo times the price.

I will be watching your video with great interest.

don't count your chickens too quickly re the race.....

up-draught fuel injection ...reciprocal gearing ...GT windscreen wipers....lowered and widened ashtrays...double overhead furry dice

the whole engineering panoply bought into play here for a win !!

Running but have found a few probs, on closer inspection crank bearings will need replacing (hope John has some).

Can't see that they will be hard to change, turn up a stepped drift knock them out, knock new ones in ream job done.

Anyone know what size reamer to use (crank dia +)?

Also have noticed that the back plate has been slightly distorted, probably someone tried using a screwdriver to lever off the fly wheel.
Will mount on a piece of bar in lathe and try to straighten it up a bit with a rubber hammer.

The spark is good, strong and blue, but when spun up with a drill you can see it is a bit hit and miss. With backplate distortion and worn crank bearings the points housing just touches the flywheel, would this contact be enough to upset the spark?

Have checked compression, it is about 55 P.S.I, Is that normal ? look like it is a bit low to me.
