Re: 40+ won't start
I'd almost be half tempted to put that flywheel back onto a known working baseplate and try it out.
See if the magnetism improves at all after a few minutes of running!
Going by the pics it definitely looks like a seagull flywheel to me.
As said before, in my experience the magnetism is normally very good with most of these, it's the cam that can wear out leading to all sorts of trouble when trying to re-gap the points.
March 1959 as a date. (do you see how easy it is to pick out the date now)
R82 A80 seem to be a generic Villiers number.

This 40 plus of yours, is it an SJP by any chance?

How many magnets do yours have Jon?
This could this be a 4 stroke flywheel.

Yes Jon its number is " sjp 18274 " and ive spun it with a drill and left a very very strong magnet on it overnight still no joy, its up to the experts now, ps it looks identical to the 2 that Tam gave me...

Perhaps check the polarity of the small magnet?
They can be removed............
Just a thort aye.

How many magnets?
3
1 Larger one
2 smaller ones
Identical in the older flattop flywheels too.
Is there a better close up pic of the cam?
Yes, the magnets are removeable provided you can release the screws. As Bruce has pointed out it's possible the polarity might have been reversed.
I'd need a closer look at this to say yes or no.

Re: 40+ won't start
Reversing the magnet polarity doesn't make any difference on this style magneto it only causes problems on a CDI.
Flywheels are balanced, removing a magnet might not be a clever idea!

Removing magnets from a flywheel is not a good idea, you're right Chas.
But there are people out there that do it all the same!
WHY

Flywheel knackered lost its magnetism spun up ok though 3 times around my head then let go. An archeologist might find it in years to come should keep him busy

Re: 40+ won't start
Nice to know the problem is finally sorted.
That's a new one with me, flywheels losing magnetism. I suppose it can happen though.
