Strong suspicion of fuel starvation here.

First thing to check is that the filters in the tank and the carb are scrupulously clean, there's no gunk in the tank or fuel line, and that the jets are clear.

have to agree with Charles ..

much trial and loads of error, wringing of hands and rending of garments, but my experience has led me down the path with any new acquisition, before even trying to start it ...

1, tank off, tap out, and scour out the inside of the tank, rinse scrupulously
2, flush and blow out all filters and fuel lines
3, carb dismantled as much as necessary and surgically clean

if you've got a spark, she'll start !

slight possibility in this case though of a leaking head gasket ?

Indeed, tapped the old gas out of the tank, cleaned carb, filled up with new gas; 1 pull perfect start.
Thanks for the reactions.
