A couple of weeks ago I couldn't resist a very pretty looking Japanese outboard: one of the earliest Yamaha marine motors, i.e. a 1963 - 1965 Yamaha PC-3, also known by it's nick-name 'Yellow Hat', that I was offered for a very moderate price.
The item is in a pretty good nick, runs first or second pull, and, most of all, is 'all-metal', that, with a bit of TLC and lots of elbow grease, became a real shiny head-turner.
The only tricky bit about this outboard seems to be finding information on it. I know it has an air-cooled 63 cc, slow-revving two-stroke engine, but that's about all I could find. It seems that the term 'PC' might have been quite rare in the '60's, but when Googleing four decades later, it doesn't do much good in narrowing the search down...
Hence my appeal to all you good people here on this British Seagull Forum: has anybody got a clue where to find more about the Yamaha PC-3 ? Serial # S13123. I am running it on a 1 : 33 mix for the time being, fitted with a Champion L85 as used in classic mopeds such as the forced air-cooled Puch and Kreidler from that era. I have no idea what kind of oil has to go into the gearbox or the autoclutch. Anyone?
