Pinion bush LS motor

Is there enough clearance to remove the shaft the pinion gear is on with the prop.shaft out and end cap off?
I'm trying to remove the pinion bush, my plan was to use a penetrating oil, a puller and tapping on the outside of the case.
I will check with John to see if he has a useable pinion bush, but if not perhaps I can get one elsewhere? Or will I have to have one machined up?

The bush together with the pinion bevel should be removed to the side of the waterpump housing. Heat it and hit it! I used a wooden rod on the pinion and hammer.

So you drove it down instead of trying to drive it up? I suppose it's the same as a later 40, but was it an LS you were working on? I'm assuming you drove it down because there does not appear to be clearance to use a hammer inside the gearcase. Although you said towards the water pump side which I guess says up.

It was a 4:1 ratio clutched gearbox used on centuries. Why are you willing to push it in? I think it's safe to to push it this way. I push it from the prop shaft side to the water pump housing.

Ok, thanks, a little more clearance in a 4:1 gearbox.

Actually British Seagull suggests to pull it out from the side of the water pump housing, but for me that can harm the surface of the gearbox under the water pump housing.
So I decide to leave it standing on a piece of wood and push the bush etc out.

What's the matter with your current pinion and bearing?
Do you need a decent replacement? LS,SJP,FP all use the same pinion (just slightly different lengths in the actual bush)

PM me as i have a few ready to go
(as Stelios has just said heat the gearcase to "scorchio hot" and from inside the casing hit upwards on the pinion so it comes out through the pumphousing apperture,refitting is the reverse of removal)

Thanks, I was not certain that the LS shared the same bush as SJP etc. it was a badly maintained gearbox, the shaft has perhaps 4-5 mm clearance either side as it passes through the bush. Surprisingly, the inside of the motor was in beautiful shape, appears never to have been run in the salt, looked like new, gaskets and all.

So the 200,000 BTU fuel tank uncapper propane torch then!
