Yes......I got my magnetos mixed up in all of the excitement of finding someone else with a boatman.

By the looking of the pics you really will have an easy time with it. Very rare to see such condition aye.

I love the idea of the socket insert as well.

They came with either a lodge CN or a Champion L10.

Use a NGK B6Hs or Champion L90C. Both of these are standard non resistor plugs. The CN and L10 were warmer plugs but not the hottest.

Engine number.............Twins I know sort of but not singles. My single has 59/5083 or the 8 could be a 2.

Another two numbers from past pics. They are around somewhere.

They are really all very close are they not?

That's a Wico-Pacy ignition.

There's a 2 cylinder version (2 lots of yours) sitting in a box at my feet waiting for some attention, that came off an Anzani that I'm trying to find a contact breaker for.

That's the sort of engineering that reminds me of dour Scotsmen with square fingers. I can picture them in grey dustcoats from working in factories in my youth. They probably don't exist anymore.

Flushing the cooling with a silicone nozzle fitted to the hose. A good idea! Good flow all round!

Then tried to start it with the prop off and in a tub of water. A couple of kicks and then nothing. Looked at the sparking plug... covered with a water/oil film. Looks like the head is coming off after all. I'm presuming the head gasket is the problem, any pointers as to what grade of gasket paper and type of gasket goo to use? I've looked in the local auto parts stores and if you read the fine print, none are recommended for use as head gaskets with exposure to petrol.
Are they just covering their bums or is that fair dinkum?

This is where the corrosion problem comes into play.

0.6 - 0.8 oil gasket paper on nice finished surfaces.

1.0 oil gasket paper if surfaces are dodgy and water gallery in head is thin to outside or inside.

Spray can of Hylomar medium coat both sides. NO Silicon.

Well, I'm not going to die wondering about this, so into the workshop this morning, disconnect the cooling tube from the head, 4 bolts, a gentle tap with a rubber hammer and she's off. Here's the head.



Here's the other side of the equation.



There seems to be a problem at the bottom.



The bore looks alright.



And here's the gasket off. A bit of water might have seeped in there under pressure!



Does not look like a lot of corrosion.



The old gasket measures up at about .8mm so I'll see if I can find some more of that for a replacement.

I had some made up by a gasket company using a laser cutter. They kept the file on record, but I recall the single is a tad different to the twins... Bruce?

By the way your head looks in great condition. I had to have mine recond by a head company.

I'm still not sure about what to do with the ignition advance. Should I tighten it up so's it does not move around so freely once the motor has started?

Great work Up and running without too many problems.

It's nice to score a vintage outboard with a healthy ignition system. Some of the coils etc are becoming hard to find these days.

I also have a couple of Riptides. One day soon I hope to get them going. One of them has a fuel tank that seems to be correct, but is not. I don't know if there is a bracket missing or what.
I'm sure somebody will be able to advise me,

Nice collection there!
See what you mean about the tank, looks like it has been replaced at some stage. The livery looks like Victa? The connection bolts underneath the tank are also different.
Different ignition advance levers on the two single too. Do you know how they are meant to be operated in actual practise?

Hi all,
Sorry for the late reply, but I lost internet for a week, due to server problems.
I think the Tank may have been changed, but have also wondered if there was a Long Range Tank available, as the style is about right, and with a couple of small brackets made, it should fit.
The throttle advance levers are about the same, although one is slightly bent. I have yet to start any of them, so I don't really know how they will work.
I seem to have a problem with aquiring outboards, and not enough time to work on them.
