Jammed Villiers throttle slide

Post by Eastern Counties »

I've been helping my grandson get a Century 100 running. It was given to him with an unknown history.

Anyway, with a little fettling we got it to run in a dustbin. Then we discovered the throttle was jammed open.

After a week letting the WD40 soak in, we got the top screw ring and disc off the throttle barrel. I assumed that then the throttle slider would pull out with the cable attached, but it is stuck tight. I didn't want to be too drastic with it. What I assume is the top of the slider is brass with a small countersunk screw in it . Is that the top of the slider or is it a cover that has to be removed first? I've had a look at the Villiers diagram which would suggest there is just the slider, but as I say, thought I should seek advice for fear of damaging a prized Seagull

Thanks

John

Thanks for the strip-down animation.
I haven't got the carb here, but from the animation, it looks as if it should be possible to withdraw the throttle slide (and needle) from the main body once the screw ring and top disc have been removed, simply by pulling the throttle cable upwards.

Perhaps the jet is jammed.

Anyway, I'll try a bit harder now I know it SHOULD come out.

Thanks again John

i've had this before on villiers carbs.
sometimes you get lucky and sometimes they are a right sod to take apart!
i've done 2 now with a seized throttle slide. the best advice i can give you is take your time with it.
dont go pulling on the cable as it will probably snap! if,as you say, the throttle is stuck open, this may help you.
once you remove the outer cowling you'll be able to see the end of the slide. if there is a gap between the bottom of the carb and the slide you might be able to get some kind of a lever to push the slide up/out. CAUTION. dont force anything too hard. if it wont go first time soak it again with wd40 or similar for a couple of days and try again.
if that doesn't work, heat it up with a blow torch (make sure it is well away from any fuel obviously)
heat and soak repeat as required.

on the 2 i've done what i think was happening was the carb appeture where the slide goes up/down was pretty tight hence it jammed up.
little polish here and there on the slide (it'll probably be brass, maybe plated brass unless its a later aluminium type) bit of emery to polish the bore of the slide and it should be good to go.
cleanliness is everything with these carbs. if you're going to the extent of removing the slide why not completely strip it and clean it?
they do get gummed up when the motor hasn't been used for ages.

Thanks for the advice, Jon. That's sorted it.

I had wondered about trying to lever the slide up, but was concerned about damaging it, or the needle. Anyway, with your encouragement, after a week soaking in WD40, I gently applied some pressure and the slide moved slightly. More WD and some gentle sliding and it was free. Once out, it looked as if the aluminium had corroded onto the brass slider. We cleaned it all off with oil and a rag and put it all back together, then took the opportunity to free the throttle cable as well. Now the throttle opens and closes with ease.

Thanks again
