Hello everyone, Im new and just got my first Seagull.
Its a 40, not sure which variant. It has a three bladed prop and a clutch.
Iv just cleaned up the points and replaced the HT lead as it wasn't running when I bought it. All went well.
While giving it a light bit of maintenance I though I may as well replace the gearbox oil.
Is EP 80W/90 ok to use? I have a fair bit knocking around spare.
There is a one large plastic drain/filler and a smaller bolt higher up on the casing, is the plastic cross head one the only drain/level plug?
Cheers..
EP 80W/90 OK?

Re: EP 80W/90 OK?
I use it, if I have no 140.
There has not been a problem, might be some more leaking,
But change it each year and when using the engine a lot make sure the box has oil in it.
This in my opinion is much more important than waiting to find 140.
Stick some gear oil in it and use it, I have used 80 grade in my racing Century Featherweight box for years with no ill effects.
Does your engine look like this with a three bladed prop?

Post a picture of it, that always helps.

What is the model number stamped on the flange at the top of the driveshaft tube.cjfernandes wrote:Thanks, ill drain and put in what I have then, here is a photo of mine...
Visible in your picture but not quite all clear enough to read
It will identify the model and age precisely.
I think from the additional screw in the gear case above the upper cap screw and from what I can read of the number that it probably does have a sealed gear case ( meaning fitted with oil seals) and that EP90 is the correct oil to use.

All of that style gear box (2.5 : 1) had oil seals. so your oil is the correct viscosity.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

How would the novice new owner know that it's 2.5 : 1Charles uk wrote:All of that style gear box (2.5 : 1) had oil seals. so your oil is the correct viscosity.
Edit: Dont tell me ... by counting how many times the flywheel turns for 1 revolution of the prop.
