I finally got around to taking the gearbox apart on my 40 Minus. It was full of muddy sludge and, as I'm finally getting ready to fire her up and see how she runs, I decided it was time to clean it all out. I pulled the cover off, then undid the propeller and slid the shaft through to get all the gunk out. The problem is, between the collar that is held to the prop shaft with a drift pin and the bushing In the gearbox there WERE two washers - one metal and one... something else.
The "something else" washer crumbled in my fingers. I'm assuming that it was some sort of gasket, either rubber or fiber, but I have no idea for sure.
So, is it a British Seagull only part and if so, where do I get one, or can I fake it with a rubber washer of the correct dimensions?
Also, I need 2 new gearbox cover screws - one snapped when I tried to turn it.
Took apart my gearbox, now I need a part.

Hi,
Outside the gearbox, between collar and bush, you need one rubber washer. Nothing else.
Inside you need one hardened thrust washer part No S1383. This one fits between the bush in the cap and the big gear. But there are 3 thicknesses. If you still have this washer, that's nice.
Screws are available as the other bits. You can contact John.

I love the 10600/145 turns!!!

The washer you talking about sets the depth of gear engagement and is hardened steel. Bush (U.K.) = bushing or sleeve bearing ( North America)
Interesting contrast between homey and homely between U.K. and North America as well.

the "something else" washer is also known as a grit seal (not really an oil seal) and they do wear a lot but vital on your 40 series gearbox.
as you say, you could fake it with something of suitable thickness.
as per STELIOS, dont lose any of the washers inside the box.
screws are striaght forward to replace, just drill and retap.

Re: Took apart my gearbox, now I need a part.
Thanks, folks!
I must have gotten my brain cells tangled when I took this thing apart. I layed everything out on the bench again last night and figured out I had the thrust washer on the wrong side of the gearbox.
I also was able to remove the broken screw after TIG welding a nut to what remained of the screw. It's all smooth sailing from here on out!
