Flywheel removal

Post by bruce nickerson »

Have a CPC and ESC models. Both stripped of lower units, now in block, and cankcase assembly status. Having trouble removing flywheels. The CPC has the Villiers magneto so with the large cutouts it is fairly easy to hold with one hand while rapping dome nut with hammer in other hand. However, ythre ESC has the Wipac magneto with no holes and is difficult for me to hold while someone else raps the dome nut. The flywheel will not budge in either care. HELP!!!

It's just possible that the CPC would respond better if you were to employ 'Whacking' with a big hammer rather than 'Rapping' which implies less percussive force.

One or two good blows should suffice.

The ESC you can find a way of suspending it by the flywheel. The force of the blow is countered by the inertia, rather than simply by the flywheel being held captive.

Repeated rapping with a hammer that's too small may just damage the crank...

I think Charles' mention of inertia is key here. Personally I find that is far easier to remove flywheels with the added mass of the lower leg still attached whilst having an assistant hold the motor up off the floor by hand pressure either side of the flywheel.

This is the workshop manual method. It's a good idea to have something soft on the floor to take the impact of the skeg if the assistant accidentally loses grip or the person striking the top nut really goes for the coconut shot! The other consideration is a good dose of WD40 or similar releasing fluid applied down the woodruff keyway a few hours earlier.

I've also found that it is best to have my Project Manager hold the motor rather than wield the hammer.......
