Modern Plugs in Seagulls
Hi Has anyone tried using modern plugs in Seagulls, My points are badly damaged, and im thinking of using a victa powertorque type module, and wondering if i would get better results. both plug and spark wise, using platinum or iridium plugs, as we are in our old aircraft. The plugs have adapters of cause to fit the cylinders.
Any thoughts are most welcome

1650bullett has used the module with the standard seagull plug and it works really well

Plugs on Seagulls are no resistance, just to keep it in mind. Apart from that I have no experience in the matter.
I love the 10600/145 turns!!!

Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
Your wasting time and lots of money using them plugs in a seagull. All I use is the stock Champion spark plugs with the victa ignition module and it works a treat. Don't use the Atom ignition modules because they have a plastic case and it melts away up inside the flywheel. Vita modules are incased in metal alloy and heat resistant resin. That's why they are screwed to the side of the engine block behind the carbs on all there mowers.

Thank you 1650bullet,
I found a unit on ebay form someone in OZ for around $20 comes with instructions and looks like it should do the job.
Sparkplug cap to find and then back in the wheelie bin (i mean OHS approved test tank )
Guessing your in Brisbane by you green test tank, Im in Logan. at Browns Plains.
Picture of unit. Thanks again to All for the help.

Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
Please, anyone willing to spend a little time explaining me what is, what is inside, what does an ignition module?
Thanks,
Sandro
Thanks,
Sandro
Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
I don't know, but I suspect its something like, Seagull type of ignition system is designed to spark when the magnetic field is at its highest point and then the points open allowing the coil to produce a spark, the module takes the place of the points and produces a spark at the same highest point.
Something like that, I have fitted them to engines before, I even have some about, but never used them on outboards myself.

Thank you Keith,
so if it has the function of the breaker points, it feels the magnet passing in front of it and it must be placed in a very
accurate position on the plate to achieve the wanted spark timing. Is it so?
Sandro
PS and in a motor with variable timing? (non Seagull)

Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
It replaces the point but can be mounted anywhere, it picks up the charge from the coil and releases a spark at the highest point.
It is a bit like a flux capacitor, which I know just as much about.

Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
Now i understand a little more. It's the primary winding of the coil that gives the time.
I could use one on an old mower I have. I'll search the internet for a dealer near me.
Thank you,
Sandro

Re: Modern Plugs in Seagulls
That one is a copy of the real deal. You will have problems.
Go to a lawnmower shop in AU and ask for
1. BINORM #340-040
2. VICTA MAO-56-17A
About the $40.00 mark.
Both of those numbers are for upgrade from points maggy.
Please note that if your coil is having age related issues there may well be an erratic spark. Make sure your coil of choice is A1 first. It is not the modules' fault as it will be doing what your coils saturation point indicates.
Plug types?
Stay with what was original.
