Hey, all
Got a call from John B tonight, he's worried about the fact that his gearbox keeps draiing itself after about 40kms of running.
Seems to recalla thread or discussion hear about something you could do to ensure the gearbox didn't lose its vital fluids via the seal on the shaft behind the prop.
He wants me to text him back with ideas.....
Anyone got one???
Hes using Penrite 140W, and it gets progrrressively thinner and thinner until its more water than poil and then just runs out of the box and leaves it dry-ish....
Anyone seen this issue before..????

V ring, nitrile, V12A: These have helped reduce my gearbox leaks. I have put one on the propshaft and one above the pinion gear.
Before I used these I was having to top up after every two fishing trips; I haven't had to top up for the last 10 trips (about 2 hours each trip).
I know it's not authentic, but my gearbox oil is always free of water; it only loses a few drops in the garage as well.

On clutched gearbox I had made a disk of gasket paper (lubricant-proof) like the one John uses on the gasket on the water pump housing (2mm). The spring pushes the disk onto the walls around the bush. Tight fit of course. That worked for me. The disk was like the rubber washers used on gearboxes. He could use two rubber washers. One in the inside, as close to the walls as it can get, and one outside. Apply marine grease on the shaft where it gets out of the gearbox and then push the washer to go in its place.
I love the 10600/145 turns!!!

Re: URGENT request from the Murray River boys
This gearbox has got very tired bearings, a sort of seal that might self distruct is not the answer unless they're planning on a visual inspection every 10 K or it could be running on water for 50K.
Thicken up the oil with some cheap non lithium, non waterproof grease, 10 pumps at first then 20 if that's not viscous enough to stay in the box & check with the local agriculturial oil suppliers for thicker lube, I use EP460 in some pre War gearboxes. Then lube change every day.
These Seagull non sealed gearboxes were designed to run on an emulsion of oil & water & have done so for more than 60 years, why would you want to stop this happening?

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

I'd agree with Charles, water in the gearbox is entirely normal. the emulsion tends to be agrey/white mush on my engines. If you are worried change the oil each evening, and as Charles says thicken the mush up using a few blobs of a suitable grease.

I was under the asumpion that 2 days of running and then change the gear case oil. It looks like they are doing 8 to 10 hours a day and seagulls are supposed to have the gear case oil changed every 10hrs. If its like a iced coffee appearance. It's fine. The seal that by chance posted up work well, I use them myself.if the boys are still repairing the other boat they could get some while there still in town.
