Which grease to stop bolts seizing?

Post by frankystein »

Hi,

I've worked with old motorcycles for years and so I'm used to freeing up seized nuts & bolts. On a motorbike I use 'copper grease' on all the threads when I re-assemble, and this ensures that I don't get any future seizure problems. I've been told that I can't use copper grease on seagull parts (something to do with ion reaction?).

So my question is: Can anyone advise me on which grease I can safely use on my seagull's threads to do the same job that the copper grease does on my bikes?

Thanks!

I use any grease to hand, and never had a problem.

I use copper grease as I think its the best solution - have thought about the differential metals issue, but never worried about it because a) I use my motors in fresh water - I guess in Southampton your boating is all on salt water, and b) each motor get so few hours in the water over a season anyway.
Equally, I suppose any grease which forms a lubricated layer will stop corrosion, which took many years to occur in the first place.

There is the silver colored grease similar to the copper that is suitable for use on aluminum. Pine tar also seems to work quite well.

I use a grease called Neversieze, use it on all of my outboards & they are used in sea water.

This is the stuff, Use it on D shackles on Moorings in Sea water & you can always undo them years later. And use it on outboards. You can get smaller containers, as this size has taken nearly 30Yrs to use. Only just opened this one.

Lanoline is by far the best grease for bolts. Any grease that contains any form of metal is a no no, as creates electrolysis
