Hello all, I am new to the world of Seagulls... Got my first one about a month ago (Curlew) and fell in love. Now I have a 1975 Forty Plus too, picked up just a couple of days ago. Where does it all end...
I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer but will start with the easy one first in this thread... I can't, for the life of me, find the serial number on the Curlew. I've checked the motor all over including the lower part of the crankcase where I would expect it to be but didn't find anything obvious. Not even sure if its possible with stamping but I thought it might have been painted over so took some wire wool to that area but nothing showed up - just the yellow undercoat. Is it possible to have no serial or am I just not looking hard enough? On the other hand the serial on the 40+ is dead obvious.
It's the same place as your 40+ serial number,
it's possible if it had a new crankcase that the number was never re-stamped if the work was not done at the factory but at a dealers.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
Must be a new crankcase then. I doubt they could forget to stamp a new motor leaving the factory!
Wonder what would have caused it to have been replaced. Catastrophic breakage around the con-rod/crankshaft connection? Can't imagine the crankcase taking a breaking blow from an accidental fall although the motor does seem to have taken a fall or two over the years as the clutch lever is badly bent inwards and the thumbscrew on that side had broken in half.
