Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
Re: Help! It won't start.
Does that mean Jeremy will have to have a attractive lady in a white coat assisting him? Just like the tv show?
Re: Help! It won't start.
It started!!!
The carb and pipe off my other FV did the trick.
I repeated the swap ie put its original carb and pipe on - didn't start. Then put the replacement one on and it started again.
Great. In process of looking at the original carb and pipe.
White Coats. With the lack of progress and my resultant mental state, I was begining to think that I might have to be taken away by those in white coats. However now I am celebrating an attractive lady in a white coat or not, is altogether a different matter! Thanks Adrian for the thought, (and I am afraid that is all it will be!).
It appears that there is something in the curly pipe that is causing an intermittent blockage. I always flood the carb to start as standard. There is slightly more guesswork involved with the carbs that I have on the FVs, as there is no drain hole in the side of the bowl. I have assumed this is correct for this period. Anyway why it didn't start when there was fuel coming out of the tickler is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps I should have cleaned and dried the plug between starting attempts. Once it started running with an overfull bowl it should (?) have run for some time when cold(?) even if the supply was only dripping through. Perhaps I wasn't alert to the significance of possibly holding the tickler down longer than normal.
I need to have a few more starts under my belt, before drawing too many conclusions.

This just means you've failed to clean the carb as well as you thought you had!

Re: Help! It won't start.
No, the carb was very clean. The curly pipe was the problem. I am not 100% sure that it is completely clear now, even after trying and failing to get a wire through it and blowing it out with compressed air. I am concerned that there is something in it which the wire pushes around to the carb end of the pipe. if you are familiar with this pipe, I am sure that you would understand

Re: Help! It won't start.
I had a similar fault with the 102 I took to Hayling last year. It fired up but would not rev when opening up the throttle, as if the wrong prop was fitted.
It turned out the fuel pipe was full of sludge, and when rebuilding the engine I had overlooked cleaning the fuel pipe out
I bet if you put an air line or even a water jet onto one end of the fuel pipe then a load of grunge will get flushed out.once you have done that let it soak in WD40 or paraffin overnight. Bet you will be ok then. Don't forget the white coat

Re: Help! It won't start.
Adrian,
No sludge has come out. I have tried to poke a wire through it. The wire gets jammed about 1/2" from the banjo end. Although I can poke a wire with difficulty a short distance in from the banjo end. Using compressed air produces air through the pipe, but subjectively not as much as I expect - difficult to be sure. Further fiddling required. I want to be 100% confident that there is not a lump of anything in the pipe.
Thanks for your advice

All is becoming clear...you have a constipated seagullI want to be 100% confident that there is not a lump of anything in the pipe.

Re: Help! It won't start.
I think the treatment has produced a clear pipe - no more constipation!
I have swapped the bits back and the engine seems to start ok, although not with the reliability of first pull everytime as it used to do. Anyway I plan to be way on hols for a couple of weeks, so it will be there on my return.
Thanks for all the advice and support - much appreciated.
