King of Threads

Post by Hugz »

No it is not a tarot card but what is the relationship between BSF and Whitworth?

I recently bought a Whitworth thread gauge from UK ebay (surprised you guys missed it) and found that century head bolts 5/16" BSF are the same as 22G W.....keh?? What does 22G stand for? Must be an oldie worldie English thing. Great toy for 8.50 quid. (we don't have pound signs on keyboards downunder :? )

What country is the thread gauge made in? i suspect from looking online it could be German as G (supposedly from German/English "Gas") are the cylindrical pipe threads used on originally inch based pipes or The "G" designation is used to denote a parallel thread ???,
These may help :

You are quite correct chicken. There is no country of origin on it. It does have Whitworth 55o on it. I think it is a bit of a mystery between BSP (55 degree cut) and Whitworth.

Oops...they are popping up all over the place and I thought it was rare :oops:

G = Guage me thinks.

Not many people know, but the gentleman who introduced whitworth (Joseph Whitworth) Supplied the whitworth rifle to the confederate army back in the us cival war. It was the first ever gun to have a Patented rifled barrel (instead of a traditional round) The soldiers were know as the whitworth sharp shooters because they could hit any target at a 2000yard distance compard the union armys enfield rifle. The template case that has all the bits to copy the rifle is still in storage at englands military warehouse facility.
