Thanks Chilli, he was in poor health so not totally unexpected.

Bruce, here is a pic of the silver coolie cover above the copper one. There is a very slight variation ie silver one is a tad higher and a tad smaller but hardly discernible.

Have you tried Jan yet? You could probably make one if you didn't mind the hand beaten rustic look.

Leave that out on your decking when I'm driving past & you'll never have to polish it again.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

SOS have aluminium coolie hats, so you could buy one of those and then have it copper plated?

I could be wrong but I don't think electrolysis works on Aluminium. Need a good conductor for the ions to attach....

It's possible , but not very practical .Copper is an active metal and so difficult to plate onto a passivated surface, making direct plating of iron based metals difficult , aluminium for a number of other reasons . Such surfaces often require a nickel strike base coat for the copper to adhere to.
The plating seen in chemistry classes, often obtained with a coin and copper sulphate bath, is in fact deposition as opposed to plating. Subjecting the surface to any wear causes the unstuck deposit to come away. Niander might be able to help you with this one .
I understand he has some knowledge in this area . Would not be easier to make a mould and press your own out of copper sheet ?
Commercial platers often use a copper cyanide-based solution to ensure a high level of copper remains in solution. These solutions are inherently dangerous due to the highly toxic nature of cyanide.

Nice and shiny!

If anyone wants new Ali ones, got a box full at SOS HQ! all in preservative too, £5.00 a time! will have to measure the diameter....

not as nice as brass, but original!
