It is possible to fit a helicoil, but as it is a non standard thread size I doubt a helicoil could be found. So the answer is to fit a standard helicoil and make a new banjo bolt to fit, OR machine out the body and fit a sleeve. John is using the sleeve method.

I repaired one. I took an M16x1.5 banjo bolt, and change its diameter between head and threads to 14,5mm. Then I took a M16x1.5 nut and rasp it so much that remain almost only the threads, it became like a ring. I did that catching the nut on a drill and spin it on a grindstone. I did the same to reduce the diameter of the banjo bolt. If you are careful the result is nice. I suggest you take a helicoil insert for M16x1.5, then do the trick with the drill to reduce its diameter because if you don't do this modification the insert is too thick for the amal 46N body. If I remember correct you should reduce the insert's diameter about 2mm. Then with a dremel you will need to increase the carb body diameter a little but not too much so as to be dangerous to break. Then you put the insert inside without stretching the carb body, add some loctite glue for threads and you will be ready. I put patex repair metal (glue), supposed to be good and the whole thing is working properly.

If you want I can send you an M16x1.5 and some helicoil inserts to play. In addition I could also play with one destroyed carb body if you would like to sell one.

Threading with tap as I can remember when measuring on the carb body cannot be done without the risk of breakage. To do it this way I believe you have to add material by welding before taping.

I made a stainless insert to fit the carb I then found the correct tap and tapped the correct threads in the insert so original parts will fit. So Niander101 don't throw out those damaged carburetor bodies they can be repaired. The correct tap was not to hard to find.

You can get them on ebay, you will also require a 3/4" tap & die to thread the outside of the insert & the carb body & a tapping drill for the same & a pillar drill or mill with a good drilling vice, because if the tapping drill grabs it will fracture the carb body.

With access to a machine shop & the right tooling this is an easy job!

This is not really a job for a man with a cordless drill & a vice, ask your local engineering workshop for a price to do this for you & John's rebuilt bodies will start to look very cheap!

i saw them taps on fleebay...i also saw the price!...about £50 must be cheaper somewhere

As Charles says, when you price up the tooling and plant needed, then John's refurbished bodies are good value. Once you start buying specialised tooling then the £s add up!

Perhaps we should pool our resources a little.
