Mud In Gearbox - ?

Post by travisb1 »

Hi Guys new to forum so hope Im ok to ask a question. I recently bought a longshaft silver century. I started to do an oil change only to find the gearbox half full of mud! I have cleaned it out and bought new crown gear and gaskets, but im worried more water and mud will get in. I have done some tests and the water is coming down the drive shaft and around the little dive drive cog into the gearbox. So, obviously excessive wear. How do I get that drive cog out and replace that and the bush or sleeve bearing it runs through to stop this happening again.
Many thanks for any help.
Regards
Travis

Give John a ring & take it to show him, he's in Tillingham he will explain the most cost effective way to fix it, as it might be cheaper to buy a udes gearbox.

Thanks Charles, I cant get down to see John for a few weeks with work commitments. Sounds like I will need to strip off old geabox then. Is there a guide anywhere as to how to go about this?

The mud in your gearbox, If it was light brown and the constancy of soft putty, then that's the old oil, sometimes with large salt crystals, depending on the water it was use in.

Did you know that seagulls are designed in a way were the water Emulsifies with the gear oil, Thats why it should have a muddy or Iced coffee look about it. Here is a couple of pics of my gearcase, The first one down is what it looks like when overdue for an oil change. The second one down is what the oil looks like after a day in the water, I overfilled the gearcase with oil. Thats why it is flowing out of the water intake port, but you can see the colour of it already. (its going a muddy or iced coffee texture)

Well mud was grey and gritty, like Essex mud, the oil was still oily and on top of mud. What stops water entering gearbox on a good seagull? Is it just the to tightness of the shaft in it's brass bearing bush?

They have no oil seals like your modern day outboards. Just the brass bushes. Nothing can stop water entering the gearbox on a seagull. Thats how they are designed. Even the best and tightest of all sleeves in a seagull gearbox will leak water in, Give your gearbox a good cleanout. Refill with oil, and use a new gasket if you want on the cover. and go out for a couple of runs. And then check it all out again to see how the oil and water emulsify.
