Cylinder base bolts - 40plus

Post by Mark »

Just rebuilt a 40 plus that was scrap. Unbelievable it started first pull! Then I discovered that I had left the washers off when attaching the cylinder base to the crankcase. Does that matter too much? I would rather not disturb the nice seal I have with a new gasket and hermatite if I can help it. Second question - altho the block is very good with no blockages, and I was very careful when putting the water delivery pipe back together, it pumps no water! I used a hose to reverse the flow and got the water to run from cylinder tell tale back to the foot water intake fins - so I am 99% sure that the pipe is fiited ok. Does this mean that the impellor is gone? If so, what's the best way to get at it and replace it? Does I need a new base gasket on the foot?

If you undo the base nuts one at a time and replace them complete with washers you shouldn't disturb the gasket and Hermetite. There's always a danger that if a washer is left out the nut could undo itself, which is less than ideal.

Have you tried running your 40+ without its prop? In a small tank like a dustbin or wheelie bin the prop can actually interfere with the water flow. It's also worth remembering that these things won't pump water at low revs. So it's important to have at least half throttle.
