repairing round brass tank

Toooo much dents to just fill and repaint. I need to take both ends off . How much heat does it take and how do I do it ?

Filler end first as that is the least dented ?

I think you will need more heat to get the ends off. A propane torch might be better. Don't think the blowtorch will cut it. I have the same blowtorch! H-A has a video on youtube:

That's a seriously battered tank! Make sure the tank is really well washed out, with no trace of oil or fuel remaining. Do it outside!

If you pop round I will take the ends off for you.

You need a large propane torch.

I have a large petrol blowtorch it is absolutely excellent for all freeing off tasks
and powerful it would certainly do that job

Try it & see, silver solder requires a LOT of heat

Got the loan of an industrial heat gun. Didn't even change the colour of the brass. Never even came close to melting anything.

You will need a very large propane torch, similar to the ones used by felt roofers.

Brass is a very good heat conductor so you need loads of heat in order to melt the silver solder. Heat the tank from below the end being removed and around the joint until it starts to glow cherry red, the silver solder should then start to melt and you should be able to work around the joint with a long implement such as an old screwdiver and gradually push the end off.

One of my brass tanks was actually brazed rather than soldered. The braze actually looked like weld!

I did get the solder tested using Nokia's scanning electron microscope.

The result was silver solder, I believe that braze has a higher melting point which could cause additional problems during manufacture.

My money is still on siver solder.

Then use soft solder when you put it back together.
