WC series restore

Post by vk7hch »

I am restoring my 1970 WC clutch drive 102.
It has a longer tank than my TC, 15 1/2" compared to 10 1/2", but is is the same diameter. It is a round brass tank, screw in fuel cap, chromed fuel tap.
It is dent free, but the straps have to be replaced. There is damage to the paint around the circumference where the straps fit, so I plan on sanding the tank right back and doing a nice gloss black on it. I have already sourced petrol resistant clear for the top coat.
My question/s is/are: The tank currently has no logo on it at all, is this correct? Has it possibly been repainted already? What is the correct logo to fit to this year?

For a WC the 'sailorman' logo is the right one. John can supply.

I don't know if yours has been repainted, it's possible.

What product are you going to use? I've drawn a blank in that department.

Will go out in the am to Spectrum Paints in Derwent Park and grab a can, then I can give you a name.

No pics didn't happen Chris...

I used Watyl clear lacquer over my transfers and it seems to hold up well to fuel. Spectrum wanted a fortune for two pack clear in a can. I researched this for days and spoke to several paint experts about water slides befor deciding that the effort was far outweighing the cost of a ten dollar transfer that I could always replace again later!
Cheers Rolf.

Got it, KBS Coatings Diamond Finish Clearcoat. 100% Gloss
300gm can, $28
Yes it is expensive, but it is not a 2 pack, just a single can.
I am assured that it is petrol resistant.
Time will tell I suppose.

They also do two pack in a special pressure pack. Has a button that injects the hardener so once you start you can't stop, about $40. I was looking at this as my tank was two pack black and you shouldn't put acrylic lacquer over the top as it can fry the finish.
A bit of research said it was possible but use a very light coat and gently build it up drying in between.
It's not just the petrol compatibility but also the compatibility to what it's going on, gets quite complicated and that's why I gave up and just used what I had.
Is the KB acrylic or celluloid?
Let us know how it goes.
Cheers Rolf.

Honestly I can't tell you, all I know is that it cleans up with lacquer thinners.
It contains "Aliphactic Polyisocyanate" so I wouldn't try snorting it!!
There is also a warning that once you start spraying with it, the rest of the can (or actually the output valve) has a shelf life of 30 days. Due to the valve gluing up.
Full cure in 4 to 7 days @ 15 to 30C. About a month here in Tasmania!!
