dinghy fendering

Its not seagull related but does anyone know how to attach large diameter rope to the gunalls (excuse spelling!!)of a dinghy to act as fendering?the dinghy is a old brookes marine ally job, there is a serise of holes along the edge of the boat so i can only assume it should be whipped on some how.
