Gearbox seal

Post by FeatherweightPete »

Hello fellow bird lovers! I need a little advice. As part of my 'flock', I have a later Featherweight with the so called 'sealed' gearbox. Inevitably, the seal has failed and I've been told to ignore it and fill the gearbox with good old SAE140. Is this a long term 'fix' (non fix!), or should I replace the seal? Erudite opinions gratefully anticipated!
Cheers Pete

No it's not a long term fix - but it is a long term work-around. generally speaking I'd go for a new seal, which isn't expensive and puts the gearbox back into it's designed state. It also will be liable to leak less oil onto the car boot carpet.

Leaving it leaking and filling it with thicker stuff is OK in the short term.
